Anesthesiology is the medical practice of relieving pain and providing care for patients before, during, and after surgery. There are over 30,000 anesthesiologists in the US and an estimated 40 million anesthetics are administered each year. These anesthetics may also be administered by certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) or anesthesiologist assistants (AAs) under the supervision of an anesthesiologist.
