Surgeons perform operations to treat patient injuries, diseases, and deformities; consult patients on preventative care; and conduct diagnostic tests. Due to the wide range of medical equipment, specialized staff, and sterile work environment required for operations, surgeons typically work in hospitals and outpatient surgical centers, but typically aren’‘t employees of the medical facility. Surgeons may be on-call to answer patient calls, observe patients recovering after surgery, or perform emergency operations.
