About 250,000 retailers operate in Canada with combined annual revenue of over $400 billion. While some categories are concentrated, most of the retail market is fragmented: the vast majority of Canadian stores are independently owned and operated. Large companies include Loblaw’s (groceries); Alimentation Couche-Tard (convenience stores); Jean Coutu (drugstores); Canadian Tire (general merchandise and automotive supplies); and RONA (home improvement).
