About 40,000 Canadian farms and ranches raise about 11 million cattle and calves for a combined industry value of $6 billion. Cattle farming is the most common farm operation in Canada: one-quarter of all Canadian farms raise cattle. The industry is primarily comprised of small farms: about 60 percent have fewer than 50 cows and annual revenue less than $100,000. However, about 15 percent of farms are large, with over 120 cows, and hold half of nation’s inventory. Large companies include Ecolait Ltée, Western Feedlots, and Lakeside Feedyards.
