About 12,000 Canadian hog farms combine for a total industry value of $3 billion. Less than 3 percent of all Canadian farms are pig farms; however, they represent 13 percent of Canada’s total farm revenue. Hog and pig farming is concentrated: less than 1 percent of all farms market more than 50,000 head per year, generating over 50 percent of total industry revenue. Of farms, 65 percent manage fewer than 1,000 hogs, accounting for just 2 percent of industry revenue. Major hog farms include Maple Leaf Foods and Hytek.
