About 4,300 residential care facilities operate in Canada with combined annual revenue of about $14 billion. Large companies include Retirement Concepts and Extendicare. The industry is highly fragmented: homes for the aged segment of the industry is dominated by large facilities with 50 or more beds, and the long-term psychiatric care facilities segment is comprised mainly of small operations with fewer than 20 beds.
