Canada has about 500 pharmaceutical operations with combined annual revenue of about $17 billion. The industry is comprised of Canadian-owned firms, including Apotex and Merck Frosst, as well as branches of large multinational companies, including Pfizer, AstraZeneca, and Bristol-Myers Squibb. Canada’s pharmaceutical industry is highly concentrated: the 10 largest companies account for 60 percent of industry revenues. Most Canadian pharmaceutical companies are small, with fewer than 100 employees; only about 20 percent of establishments employ 100 or more.
